Is Mucinex Advisable For A Child With Strep Infection?

My son is 9 and 85 lbs. He tested positive for strep 8 days ago and has been on amoxicillin since then. He started coughing 2 nights ago. The dr prescribed bromfed dm which is not helping at all. We have tried vicks, a humidifier, and honey. What can i do to help him sleep? I have mucinex and delsym in the house. Can i use that?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
It depends on what type of cough he has, whether he coughs up sputum or it is a dry cough. Without that information, one cannot comment on this issue. However, since your doctor has prescribed bromfed, I presume he has dry cough. If that is so, then you can try a cough preparation with Codeine like Linctus codeine after stopping bromfed. (5ml in the night). Bromfed and delysm are almost one and the same. Mucinex is an expectorant used for productive cough (cough with sputum) and it will increase the cough such that the patient coughs out all the sputum/phlegm in his lungs.
