Is Metformin Safe For PCOS?

Respected Sir/Madam, I am a female 27 years old and have been diagnosed with PCOS 2 years back.I used to get
Irregular periods and so my OBGYN put on birth control pills to regulate my cycle. Now me and my husband are planning to have a baby and so I will be going off my pills from next month. Also, my OBGYN has decided to put me on metformin. Is that safe ? Also,is it okay to just get off the pill without planning any safe transition as I have been on the pill for 2 years now. thanks for your time.

Hi..Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common causes of irregular periods in women. Women with PCOS are given Birth control pills to trigger a period Birth control pills contains hormones estrogen and progesterone.
When you are planning a baby you should stop taking birth control pills. Metformin can be used it would help to regularize your period along with reducing your weight, if you are overweight.
So don't worry metformin is totally safe. you can take it in years if needed

For further queries, consult a gynaecologist
Hope this information helps.
