Is Melatonin Advisable For An Elderly Person Suffering With Dementia?

My 88 year old father has dementia. He realizes he s losing his mind and very depressed. Problem being (selfishly for me as well) he sleeps all day while i am at work and therefore is up all night. I want to give him melatonin as I feel it is a safe option of sleep aids but I am not quite sure. I just took one myself so if he gets up again he s on his own. (kidding)
