Is Macrobid The Right Medicine For Urinary Tract Infection?

my mom is in a long term care facility and they have determined that she has a UTI/bladder infection. They want to give her macrobid. She eats and drinks very little (just a note). When she was in the hospital a few months earlier, she had a UTI. They gave macrobid to her that night, but switched it the next day to another antibiotic (Keflex?), saying macrobid was not as good for her. Later when the lab results came back they switched the antibiotic again to Cypro (which she was already allergic to), then to Septa. At this long term care facility she had a UTI previously which they gave her septra and that worked. Is macrobid a good choice in her case this time? She is 90 years old and had a stroke in December

Hi,

Macrobid is not advisable for her. Macrobid is commonly prescribed in the treatment of urinary tract infection. Since Macrobid can cause benign intracranial hypertension and peripheral neuropathy and since your mother had a stroke recently so Macrobid is not safe to treat her urinary infection. She needs an alternate effective but a safer medication based on the culture and sensitivity test of her urine sample.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
