Is Lexapro A Commonly Used Medicine For Depression In The Elderly?

My mother is 90 years old , had a minor stroke in October which she appears to have completely recovered from. She has lost 10 pounds since then, very poor appetite and sleeps much more than previously . She has atrial fib, on meds for HBP but currently at 102/68, on cholesterol meds but relatively healthy. Today her doctor prescribed 5mg of Lexapro after speaking with my mom and said it is not uncommon fro someone her age to experience some form of depression ( all her friends, siblings, spouse , etc have passed away, cannot drive since the stroke) She has seven of us who come daily to help her out but we are about it. Is this drug commonly used for the elderly? YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Lexapro is the drug given for anxiety, in age of 90 years such drug needs to be avoided it is the anxiolytic drug may cause some serious side effect, like sedation, respiratory depression, and other vital organ related symptom, this is the drug which is not being used in geriatric patients.

Hope I have answered your query, let me know for further assistance.
