Dear M.V. High and Welcome.
Yes,
Levothyroxine is the treatment of choice for
hypothyroidism.
Based on the lab result of high TSH you daughter seems to be having hypothyroidism which needs to be treated with Levothyroxine.
Levothyroxine tablets are easily crushed and can be given in a spoon with a small amount of water, formula, or cereal.
Once treatment is initiated for hypothyroidism, serum total or free T4 and TSH concentrations should be measured monthly until the total or free T4 levels normalize. Thereafter, total T4 and TSH should be measured every 6 months.
Levothyroxine is generally considered to be a safe medication as long as the TSH levels are maintained in the normal range of 0.2 - 0.4 units, however it may cause hair loss during the first few months of treatment. This effect is usually temporary as your body adjusts to this medication. If this effect persists or worsens, the treating doctor should be informed.
The doctor should also be consulted if she develops increased sweating, sensitivity to heat, mental/mood changes (such as
nervousness, mood swings),
tiredness, diarrhea, shaking (tremor), headache,
shortness of breath, fast or irregular heartbeats, etc which are attributable to high dose of Levothyroxine.
Hope these answer your query.
