Is Hydroxychloroquine Advisable For A Person With Lupus?

A friend has been tested positive for lupus in her blood and a skin rash. A doctor recommended that she take hydroxychloroquine (200mg/twice daily), but she fears the side effects, and has not taken the medicine yet. She has been ill with a cold/virus, but it has lasted much longer than usual, perhaps because of the lupus. How important is it that she start this medication soon?

Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern.
luphus is multi system disorder that is diagnosed by 04 out of 11 findings. Rash and test are two of them.
Hydroxychloroquine helps in management of rash and arthritis. It's side effects like blurring of vision can be prevented by drug holiday for 3 months as it is toxicity is because of accumulation, once it's stopped all accumulated drug will wash out.
I would like to advise you to have his renal function tests and blood counts.
Hope it helps best.
