Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My LDL cholesterol is 99 mg/dL. My HDL cholesterol is 105 mg/dL. Is this good or not good? It puts my overall cholesterol at 232 mg/dL which is considered needing improvement. But I thought the higher the HDL the better. Right or wrong? My HDL is quite high and I can't find good info about if that's good or not.
Hello dear, HDL normal range is below: Less than 40 mg/dL for men = Low HDL (higher risk for CAD) 40 to 59 mg/dL = The higher, the better 60 mg/dL and above = High HDL (lower risk). But HDL average level is 46 mg/dl. High HDL level may be due to mutation in gene CETP and using drug torcetrapib which inhibit CETP. But new research tell that High HDL is not good because it interfere with reverse cholesterol transport. Also it is oxidized like LDL and increase the risk of atherosclerosis and insulin resistannce. So first repeat your lipid profile with fasting 8-10 hr. And consult best physician in your area to reduce cholesterol. Hope this advice may help you. Thank you. Take care. Have a nice day.
