Is Famotidine A Proton Pump Inhibitor?

I have been told that prilosec causes kidney damage. I have Gurd and have taken Prilosec for several years. Now, I have been told to take ranidine, which DOESN’T WORK ! Pepcid does, but I am concerned that, Famotidine is also a proton pump medication. Is it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

No, Famotidine is not a proton pump inhibitor; it is like Ranitidine, an H2 receptor blocker.

Proton pump inhibitors are Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Rabeprazole and Pantoprazole. They are well tolerated drugs and have fewer side effects.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
