Is Doxycycline Advisable For Pneumonia In An Elderly Person?

My MOther is 88yrs old and just diagnosed with Pneumonia. All her Vitals are normal. Ox Sats 98% on room air and she says other than being tired, she feels fine. They put her on Doxycycline 100mg BID x 7days and told us to follow up in 2wks. Shouldn t she be followed sooner, and is this a recommended medication?
