Is Clarithromycin 500mg The Right Medicine For Urinary Tract Infection?

I have a uti and it is 3 in the morning. I have been up with this already for hours as I can't leave the washroom. It will be 5 hours until I can call a doctor to my home. I will still need to wait hours for him or her to arrive. I have 500 mg tablets of Clarithromycin. Could I take one of those to help with the symptoms.

Thank you

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.

Actually Clarithromycin is not a drug of choice for treating urinary tract infection. Empirically, usually I prefer prescribing sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra or others) 160 mg-800 mg (1 double-strength tablet) orally every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days or ciprofloxacin 250 mg orally every 12 hours.
Bur since these are prescription drugs, you have to wait your treating doctor to prescribe them.
If you do not finish the whole dose of medicine, the infection may return and be harder to treat later. I would recommend you to drink plenty of water, in order to flush out the bacteria.

Hope I answered to your question. Don't hesitate to ask again.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
