Is Benedryl More Effective Than Clarenix 5 Mg For Hives?

Hello, I am a 72 yr old female in pretty good health. I have chronic idiopathic hives and have been taking Clarenix 5 mg for about 10 yrs. I am currently under a lot of stress and my hives are really acting up and these meds aren t helping. Is it possible I have developed a resistance to this drug and would it be ok if I try benedryl tomorrow instead of the Clarenix?

Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.

If Clarinex does not help Benadryl can be effective for hives.

Usually the newer antihistamines like Loratadine (Clarinex) are prescribed as a first line treatment of chronic idiopathic hives because they are more effective than the older ones like Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) at relieving symptoms of hives and have a less tendency to cause sedation, drowsiness or sleepiness.

Since Clarinex does not seem to help much, you may take an older form of the drug like Benadryl, but only before bedtime, as it can make you drowsy which can increase the risk of falls if taken during day time.

Hope this will help in getting rid of symptoms of hives.
