Is Bactrim DS Effective In Treatment Of MRSA?

I was recently hospitalized with cellulitis of face and nose resulting in positive MRSA swab test and IV Vancomyacin 1.5 grams every 12 hours for 8 doses. Was prescribed Doxycyline HYC 100 mg every 12 hours for 2 weeks. Still had signs of infection after completing doxycycline so family doctor prescribed Bactrim DS. Is this antibiotic effective to treat MRSA?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Vancomycin, Doxycycline, and Bactrim are all medications used to treat MRSA.

If there was any pustular drainage from the cellulitis and they took a culture, that may have information that would confirm that Bactrim is also effective against the MRSA.

But if there was not any culture done, then Bactrim is a good choice for treating MRSA. I hope that helps and that the infection clears soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
