Is Bactrim DS Advisable For Cellulitis?

I was diagnosed with cellulitis 5 days ago on the side of my right knee and it wrapped around behind the knee. They prescribed Bactrim DS 2X a day. I did not have any pain, blisters, or much swelling. Today (my 5th day) the area of infection is still growing bigger, but seems lighter in color, less heat, and the area is flatter. Should I give it a couple more days before seeing the doctor? Does it sometimes still spread before it loses the battle to Bactrim ?

Hi,

Well, if it is turning lighter in color and there is reduce heat and flatter area then there is a chance that the infection is reducing leading to reduced inflammation. When the inflammation reduces then the area can become pale initially and gradually it can appear in natural skin colour. If it is already past 5 days of taking the antibiotic then you should consult your treating physician once and get checked.

You might need to continue the antibiotic for another course to let the infection subside completely. However it looks like infection and inflammation is reduced but if the area is increasing then you need to get checked once. For now keep the area clean and also you can wait and watch for a day or two to see how it improves.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
