My grandson is 17 yrs old and is taking abiify. I m just very concerned and trying to research this drug. There is a history of diabetes in his family. I hear it is a very dangerous drug. I m not sure if he takes another drug, nor do I know what milligram he takes. Is it okay for. 17yr. Old to be on this drug?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Thanks for the question. Abilify is generally used for treating depression, schizophrenia. Kindly talk to him about dose and reason why is he on it. Its very important for family to know abot the dose prescribed and the dose taken by him.
Yes one needs to run few blood tests for kidney ,liver and blood sugar as well as lipids before starting. Mostly doctor must have already done that as you wont get this over the counter.
Always look for any symptoms like weakness, numbness , rapid heart rate , muscle twitches , irritability as they signify side effects n then dose needs to be altered. In right dose it should not cause any harm.
