Is 1400mg Magnesium Citrate Supplement A High Dosage?

I have osteoporosis and have been taking about 1400 mg of magnesium citrate spread throughout the day to help absorb my calcium in food and also I think it helps me get to sleep better. I have been doing a large amount like this for about 5 years. I went to have a colonscopy today and the doctor didn t find any polyps this time, but had found them the other two times that I had this procedure done. The nurse told me I could be taking too much magnesium and it could affect my heart and muscles. Do you think that this is a safe amount. It seems to me to be keeping my body healthier. Thank you for your help in this matter. Annette

Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Magnesium citrate can be used as a laxative or dietary supplement.
Women up to 50 years of age should take a day.
I think that your dose is very high so you should low it gradually.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
