Infant Having Large, Smooth Patch At The Back Of Tongue, No Discomfort. Signs Of Deficiency?
My granddaughter is seven months old and a perfectly healthy baby, weighing 8.4kg. She eats all solids but does not enjoy her formula too much. Mom put her on Lactogen after breastfeeding her for 6 weeks. Yesterday we noticed a large smooth patch towards the back of her tongue . It is not discoloured and she doesn t seem to experience any discomfort from it. I am just concerned that there might be some deficiency or an indication of an underlying disease?
Hello sir/madam,
I am highly concerned about your complaints regarding you granddaughter. Her weight is good. There is no compulsion for giving formula feeds to babies. You can very well continue with the breast feeding and semi solid complementary foods. Regarding smooth patch on tongue, it is better to get this examined by your pediatrician and let him decide further management. As there are several conditions with normal coating over tongue and also some conditions like oral thrush, vitamin B complex deficiency which may require some treatment. Do not worry, your child will be getting well very soon. Thank you.
