I have really short hair and when it gets long enough to pull ( an inch or two ) I get stressed out or anxious ( I don't know the right word for it ) and I pull on my hair because I think it's too long and it needs to be shaved. my friends caught me doing it at lunch and one of them grabbed my wrist to stop me. another friend when I explained it said it could be stress or maybe a compulsion? but I don't know I thought it was just a quirk. i asked my friend if it seemed like I did it persistently because I thought it wasn't but I wanted to be sure and she said "yeah man you do it a lot".I think it's starting to become a reflex because it's beginning to be that I don't know I'm doing it until I'm pulling. I'm trying to stop by wearing a beanie and that helps but I'm not allowed to wear it at school
