I am asking about prognoses in general regarding an emergency surgery on a 45-year old woman with a ruptured colon brought about by diverticulitis. I am familiar with neither of these conditions. She was back and forth to doctors via urgent care and ER visits for well over a week - and sick for longer - until the pain was finally too intense (even three mg of dilaudid [via IV] were ineffective), and the condition was discovered. She had the emergency surgery that night, one week ago. She was on a respirator for two days, followed by two more days in ICU and is still in the hospital. She is quite overweight, I'm guessing that is an important factor to consider. Now I've been reading about low percentages of long-term survival after such a surgery. I hadn't considered that she would still be in any life-threatening danger as long as she followed medical directions going forward. Should we be concerned for her long term well being, or her life? I'm typically not one to overreact - sometimes to a fault. But just as overreacting would be counter-intuitive, I don't want to under-react either. Thoughts are appreciated.
