How To Treat Sunburn Caused Itchy Rashes, Have Had Connective Tissue Disease?

I was sunburned on vacation a few weeks ago on my legs. The sunburn peeled and that was followed by a bright red rash. I have tried topical antibiotic ointment and Calagel ointment without any relief from the rash, redness, itch or irritation. I was diagnosed with connective tissue disease several years ago and I don t know if this is causing the rash to be more severe or how to treat it myself. Thank you.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

History of connective tissue disease is a significant point in your case and the red rash that you have developed is most likely due to photosensitivity that accompanies connective tissue diseases.
Connective tissue diseases/ CTD's like Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Dermatomyositis (DM), Scleroderma etc present with photosensitivity.
There can be other associated symptoms like joint pains, muscle weakness, oral ulcers, fever etc in connective tissue diseases.
These need to be specifically inquired for in your history.
Apart from the history you also need to be investigated thoroughly and that would help in classifying you into one or the other connective tissue diseases.
Management would include use of a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the day. It should be reapplied every 2-3 hours.
Specifically for the photosensitive rash I would suggest you to use a moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate 0.05% cream, twice daily.
I would suggest that you visit a dermatologist for the needful.

Regards
