Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

It could be because the wound has got infected. I hope you were given some oral antibiotic? You have'nt mentioned though.

Since the area seems to have got infected, in such a case I would suggest that the stitches be removed so as to facilitate the infection and pus to drain away. The wound can be left open and allowed to heal by secondary intention. It should be cleaned daily with betadine and covered with a topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin

If I was the treating doctor I would have advised an empirical oral antibiotic for a week OR 10 days (My choice of oral antibiotic would have been Amoxycillin 500mg in combination with clavulanic acid 125 mg, thrice daily, for a week OR Cephalexin 500ng thrice daily OR Cefadroxil 500mg twice daily, for a week). That would take care of the infection.

An OTC pain killer e.g ibuprofen once or twice daily would help you deal with the pain.

regards
