How To Treat Recurrent Constipation In A Child?

My seven years old daughter ( 26 Kg) had a little loose motion on 09 Jan 2016, took green banana as curry & also took Pomegranate juice, loose motion problem solved in two days, and started to feel constipation problem from 11 Jan 16 & took to the doctor & applied Fleet enema, first 65 ml , doesn t work much and doctor suggested to put after one 1 hour another 65 ml ( rest half of the bottle ) , she passed liquid stool and next day another 3 times liquid stool, doctor advised to take milk of magnesia 2+2+2 tea spoon , she has been taking it since 16 Jan . On 17 Jan I put two child size glycerin suppository & she passed some liquid stool, never had the solid stool. After the enema insertion , she is now bit afraid to sit on toilet commode , rather wants to pass the stool while standing , even after repeated request , do not listen to sit on commode. Currently she is taking fibrous veges , prune juice, milk of magnesia, apple , etc. Still doesn t help . For your info this child has a constipation tendency and use frequently glycerin suppository . about 3 year back once enema was used , previously constipation solved easily in a day or two , this time finding difficulties, we didn t yet made any rectal X-ray. She does not have bed wetting problem.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have symptoms of recurrent constipation. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like food poisoning, inadequate fibres in diet, lactose intolerance, intestinal Ileus or due to electrolyte imbalance in body. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order stool test , ultrasound , endoscopy along with that take history. Doctor may prescribe laxative , ornidazole or albendazole along with ranitidine. You should put esobolgol on anal area of child to loosen sphincters. For now eat light and non spicy. Avoid spicy and sharp food and keep your head elevated while lying down. Drink plenty of fluids and take diet rich in multivitamins.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
