How To Treat Mild Headache And Dent On Forehead Caused After Injury?

Daughter just hit her head on the metal frame of a couch bed. It hit above her eyebrow but below the hairline. Instead of swelling out, it dented in slightly. She seems okay otherwise but just a slight headache and tenderness in the area. Should I be concerned about it denting in instead of swelling out?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Yes, an intact skull, after an injury, usually swells up.
The dent may be due to displacement of the bone after the impact.

I recommend :
-a visit to the ER to rule fractures of skull / facial bones and displacement.
-x-rays skull and facial bones
OR CT scan of the brain if tissue injury is suspected.

If it is a fracture, treatment will be based on how severe it is, if there are displaced fragments of bone, if there is underlying tissue injury and cosmetic expectations.

Please get a medical opinion asap as head injuries can go from fine to bad in hours.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you both good health
