My 17 year old brother lives in a loving family, has friends and is successful in his studies. But he suffers from insomnia and could sometimes go with 4 hours of sleep a night, which is not enough for him as he is a diligent student and needs to concentrate a lot. It does happens some times that he does get a good night of sleep which is usually on weekends when he doesn't have the pressure to wake up 5:30am. The insomnia leads to anxiety cause: he's pressured that he has to fall asleep around 10:30-11pm so that he should be well rested and be able to get up at 5:30am to be able to concentrate on learning the entire day. So yesterday he went to the dr. with my mother and the dr. prescribed - hyrdoxyzine 10mg. he said that should calm him and put him back on schedule. So for the first time in weeks he fell asleep around 12am after lying in bed only a half an hr. hoping he would get at least 6-7 hours of sleep. but at 4:15 am he awoke and couldn't fall back asleep. What do you suggest?
hello user , considering the age and other conditions from your description - there is possibility of "nonorganic insomnia" however it needs evaluation by a psychiatrist rather than a physician as he will also decide whether it is primary or part of other disorder like anxiety disorder . in such cases psychiatrists usually prescribe tablet zolpidem 5/10 mg as it is relatively safer and less chances of day time sedation is there or he may choose to give a short course of benzodiazepine drugs like clonazepam . these drugs should always be taken under doctors supervision - apart from it you can google out and follow "sleep hygeine measures" which are some simple practical tips for sleep difficulties . hope i answered your query - any further queries are welcome - if satisfied please rate the answer
