How To Treat Dry Cough, Fever And Sore Throat While Taking Prednisone?

Hi, my 15 year old son is on 40 mg of Prednisone, day 2. He was being treated for a bad, barking cough from allergies. He now has a very slight fever, the cough is terrible and has a sore throat. How do I treat him for these symptoms while on Prednisone?

I really appreciate your concern for your son
There are chances of infection while on prednisone
Sore throat with cough and fever might be caused by infection
I see patients with similar complaints in my clinic and I would advise them for a battery for tests like blood for hemoglobin, CBC, Liver and kidney function test and an X ray chest
In case of severe symptoms a pharyngeal swab for culture

He may require a course of antibiotics under supervision of doctor
Meanwhile ask him to do gargling with warm saline water or antiseptic mouth wash.
