General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Diarrhea is the condition passing more than three watery stools in a day by an individual. Bacterial infection is the most common cause for diarrhoea. If the diarrhea is associated with blood or mucus, it is called as dysentery. Shigella infection is the common cause for dysentery. Intestinal cramps along with watery stools is the common presentation. There may be fever and chills in amoebic dysentery.

Nausea and vomiting may be seen in some individuals. Preventing dehydration due to excess salt and water is the first line of treatment, since, it may be fatal on neglecting dehydration. Oral fluids are enough to correct dehydration. Oral rehydration solution is advised in diarrhoea and vomiting to correct the salt and water loss. Antibiotics are advised in severe infection. Intravenous fluids are preferred in individuals in whom the oral fluid therapy fails.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
