Dear: thanks for using our service and will help you with my medical advise. It looks that your husband did some drastic movement that created a severe muscle spasm. This can produce a severe pain that can last few days. The bruise will go away in few days.I don't think that he will need to go to the doctor if it is not painful anymore.Just keep the leg rested, put ice during the first 48 hrs after the event.
I hope that my advise has been helpful
