How To Treat Blister In The Ear Canal?

What can I do about my daughters little filled blister in her ear canal. Nurse at school said it was driving her crazy and said she has never seen anything like it before. Haven t seen a doctor because they were closed at the time. What can I do or give her for the pain? Also do I need to see a doctor ASAP because this could affect her hearing. Because when it actually pops blood will be coming out of her ear!

Hello,

Your daughter mostly has a boil or furuncle caused by staph at the hair follicle of the external auditory meatus. The predisposing factors for furuncle in ear are damaging the integrity of external auditory meatus skin by self-cleaning efforts with different objects (pins / pens / rather large sized commercial buds), especially after swimming, is a definite predisposing factor and underlying immunosuppression conditions like diabetes mellitus.

Clear the ear of any discharge and debris beyond the boil by warm nasal saline syringing. Take oral antibiotics like Amoxicillin thrice daily for 5 days. External auditory meatus should be gently packed with a half inch (12 mm) broad gauze wick of adequate length soaked in 10% Icthammol glycerine, if available, or smeared with Ung Neosporin/Betadine.

The wick should extend beyond the furuncle so that adequate splintage is provided. Change this pack daily till the condition settles. For pain relief NSAIDS like mefenamic acid, ibuprofen can be given. So I would like to conclude by saying that you need to take your daughter to an ENT specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
