Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,
Adenoids are a vital part of the primary defence mechanism in the throat. The adenoid usually swells during any throat infection. It permanently regresses in size by about 8 years of age. However, in some children, the adenoid can be so enlarged that it obstructs the airway and produces symptoms such as snoring. It is only in such severe cases will your ENT surgeon advise adenoidectomy. An X ray of the lateral view of the neck will help in this regard.
