How To Test For Pregnancy?

Hi, I am a 30 year old woman. My husband and I had unprotected sex on the first day of my periods (5th September). My last menstrual cycle was on 5th August to 9th August. I have always had a normal menstrual cycle and have never missed my periods ever. I am not keen on taking any emergency contraceptive tablets. We think of planning our family only in the next year. Just wanted to know if there are any chances that I could be pregnant.

Hallow Dear,

On first day of the menstruation, egg is not released as yet. So for practical purposes, there are no chances of pregnancy from this intercourse.

However, if you want to have laboratory confirmation of the pregnancy status, you have following options:

1. Wait for the menses to appear. If you miss them, then only there is possibility of pregnancy. Then you may perform pregnancy test on overnight first morning urine sample a week after missing the period; earlier these tests may report false negative.

2. You may opt for Beta hCG test on the blood 10 days after the last unprotected intercourse. Values more than 25 mIU are diagnostic of pregnancy while in non-pregnant state, the values are under 5 mIU/ml.

If you are planning for family not before next year, you should practise some reliable method of birth control. Emergency contraceptive is not a routine method to be practiced; after all it is an emergency method. You may adopt methods like contraceptive pills, condom or intrauterine device regularly.

And finally, please do not perform intercourse during menstrual bleeding. Blood is a very good medium for the pathogens. So intercourse during bleeding phase carries a high risk of infection.

I hope this helps you.
