How To Test For Penicillin Allergy?

I was prescribed augmentin 875 125. I have not had penecillin or amoxicillin for over 30 years (though I have no known allergies to it). Additionally I have never taken a medication with the vulvaric acid. How would I know if I am allergic? They ask me and all I can say is I have no allergies as far as I know!!! I am fearful of taking this.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can check the allergy by simple test dose in which a small amount of drug injected underneath your skin over the forearm and look for any reactions like itching and redness. If you are sensitive to the drug we can switch over to others. Clavulanic acid generally does not cause allergic reactions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
