Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I now take 1200 mg of gabapentin for nerve pain 3 times a day total 3600mg per day, my doctor said this is the max i can take. Another doctor suggested Lyrica instead of gabapentin, if i do switch should i wean off of gabapentin or just start right up. my new Dr. said just start taking it and call me when you have reached the full dosage.
As your doctor stated, the Gabapentin can just be stopped and the Lyrica started. There was a medical study done in 2013, that can be found on the NCBI medical website that actually looks at changing persons over from gabapentin to lyrica. It had 2 sets of patients, one set was just switched and the other was transitioned slower. It made no difference, so if your doctor is recommending the switch and wants you to change over, then it is okay.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
