How To Reduce The Body Weight?

i am 62, was diagnosed in 2007 with Stage 1 breast cancer. Following MRI, had bilateral mastectomy and was on tamoxifen for 5 years. Am now on arimidex for past 2 years and cannot get my weight under control. I do not eat starches at all, have restricted my caloric intake and eat vegatables, fruits, protein and yogurt only. I am still gaining and nothing I do seems to work to take the weight off. Any suggestions? Do I need to continue the arimidex?

Oncologist 's  Response
Hi. patients taking hormone therapy(tamoxifen and arimidex) usually gain weight secondary to water retention in body. This subsides slowly after the drugs are stopped. I advise you to take balanced diet, donot leave starches completely. You can increase your physical activity like walking etc.
Regarding continuation of arimidex, ideally at least 5 years of hormone therapy should be given which you have completed with tamoxifen. Arimidex is superior to tamoxifen. The optimal duration of arimidex therapy is not known. It can be given for 2or 3 years after 2 or 3 years of tamoxifen. It can be continued for 5 years after completing 5 years of tamoxifen, especially if you have high risk of recurrence (which depends on your stage of disease). Please discuss this with your treating oncologist.
