My son-in-laws foot,ankle and leg has increased swelling since being seen in the emergency room 2 days ago after an injury...he was told to put heat on it... I was under the impression that ice was the correct treatment for swelling...please advise me
Welcome to HCM, I have gone through you query and understood your concerns, I think he can try some anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen 2-3 times a day, vitamins supplements( B ) a contrast-bath between heat and cold (alternating) 3-4 times a day 20-30 minutes on his ankle is going to help to restores some circulatory problems, he can apply ice/hot cream or gel 3 times a day, an ice bag is recommended every 2 hours the first 2 days of the traetment to avoid some internal bleeding, I kindly suggest to limit the physical activities and elevate your leg to improve or decrease swelling, a brace use is appreciate as comfortable shoes with silicone support, avoid longstanding periods, if after 10-15 days the symptoms persist a doctor should be consulted
