How To Reduce Bowel Movement After Ileorectal Anastomosis?
I was diagnosed with colon cancer in Oct and underwent a partial colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis Nov 1. Since then I have had constant diahrrea (anywhere from 8 to 15 trips to the bathroom a day). I have followed the low residue diet and have not had any improvements. Any suggestions on how to bulk up my bowel movemets? Also I am very concerned with the low residue diet I am on. It is the total opposite of what is recommended to ward off cancer. I am to eat healthfully. Is there an alternative? I am 5 weeks out of surgery now. Thank you.

How To Reduce Bowel Movement After Ileorectal Anastomosis?
Hi After hearing your history i would advise you to do the following things Take frequent, small sips of water or a rehydration drink and small bites of salty crackers. Try to increase your fluid intake to at least 1 qt (1 L) per hour for 1 to 2 hours, or longer if you keep having large amounts of diarrhea. Begin eating mild foods the next day or sooner, depending on how you feel. Avoid spicy foods, fruits, alcohol, and caffeine until 48 hours after all symptoms have disappeared. Avoid chewing gum that contains sorbitol. Avoid milk for 3 days after symptoms disappear. You can eat cheese or yogurt with probiotics. Regards DR DE
