My girlfriend has just awoken after swallowing her tongue during mid-sleep, thus causing her breathing to stop for a while. I was very lucky to have been awake at the time to gently rouse her. She has told me that she has suffered at least one bout of this per year for the last seven years, and has had her tonsils removed. What could be the underlying causes of this, and how can it be prevented in future? Thanks
Your girlfriend is having what is called obstructive sleep apneoa and there can be many reasons for this including a bulky tongue and neurological disorders. She needs to meet a sleep specialist and be evaluated thoroughly as such episodes are very risky and can be very harmful for her health. Please meet the doctor soon Thanks
