How To Handle The Episodes Of Severe Choking?

Yes. . .my husband has had several bouts of severe choking -- apparently on his saliva -- while awake. He does suffer from acid reflux (although he's been on medication for years).

I'd like to know especially what to do when he's in the middle of one of these truly frightening attacks. Raise his arms? No? Slap his back? No? We're both quite helpless when he's in the middle of this.

He is 78 years old; 5'10", about 206 pouinds.

Hi,

The very best thing to help your husband is preventing the choking attacks:
- treating his acid reflux according to doctor's advice
- give him extra pillow to sleep at night
- avoid foods that might make his stomach upset
- advise him to eat often, small portions and to chew up slowly

Some of my patients reported to get relieved when they drink water while in the middle of the attack. Raising his head and bending his body to the anterior position can also help.

All the best!
