Hi Doctor, My husband started this habit of chewing gutkha from the last 11 months. Many a times he wanted to stop it but he is kind of addicted now. He is losing appetite and not able to eat even normal spice food. Please suggest how he can come out of this habit?
There are medicines available to reduce the craving for tobacco. Bupropion and varenicline are the two options. He can discuss with his doctor and start one of these. If he does not wish to use any of these medicines, he can use nicotine replacement therapy in the form of chewing gums to replace gutkha and then gradually reduce the number of chewing gums per day before stopping completely.
Best wishes.
