Hello. My son has had ear infection for 7 days. We saw a doctor two days ago. He was given 875mg augmentin. Today he is in severe pain. No pain meds are relieving his pain. We have tried the Vicks vapor rub around the outside of the ear and it is not helping. My boy is 17 years old and also has mild aspergers so the pain is amplified. What can I do to help him. Should I take him to ER?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. For ear infection, you have to cover pseudomona ;hence a course of aminoglycoside e.g. Inj Gentamycin or Inj Amikacin is to be given in standard doses for at least 3-5 days, in addition to augmentin. You also have to give him nasal drops three times a day two drops each nostril like otrivin (xylometazoline-a decongestant) or nasivion (oxymetazoline-a decongestant) to open up the blocked Eustachian tubes. This will reduce inflammation and pain.
