How To Control Blood Sugar Level?

I am diabetic type II daignosed since Jan. 2008. After few months of some medicines, since more than 3 years I have been taking amaryl 1mg in the morning before or after breakfast. Recently 2 months back, because of bad ldl gaining ground, doctor told me to start intaking cetapin xr 500mg for 3 months. before my sugar levels in the night and morning use to be beyond boundary limits. now they are controlled. I believe this one medicine lately will also become part of my life and by age, i might have to add more tablets in future. Apart from 30 min. brisk walk4-5 times a week, moderate to strict diet control, is there anything else in my hand to control it with less medicine or if I can prevent complications till next at least 20-30 years. What is in my control ?? i want to lead my life with less medicines or no medicines and no complications related to diabeties.
