How Should A Shin Lump With Mobility And Pain Be Treated?

My little girl is 6 and I have noticed a small pea sized lump under the skin on her shin. It moves when you touch it. Also she has said that her legs ache behind the knee when she bends it (she says the pain is inside). She has been ill for the last 2 weeks with a bad cold virus and has lost a lot of weight. Should I be worried or is this a result of the virus?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Is the knee pain on the same side as swelling? Such a lump might suggest a soft tissue infection (like boil or an infected gland cyst), subcutaneous fat necrosis or an inflammatory nodule (erythema nodosum).

If the pain is not unbearable, try giving her simple analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for 3 days. Most probably she will be alright by then. Let her take some rest and avoid heavy plays till then. If the pain persists despite this, kindly take her to pediatrician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
