How Should Percocet Be Taken?

I am takin percoset 5/325 post foot surgery. 2 questions: Can you take half doses, breaking pill in half? Is itching a serious side effect? So far today I have taken 2 doses: 1 tablet, then 6 hours later 1.5 followed by .5 half an hour later to take the edge off. Ready for last dose.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Percocet (Oxycodone 5 mg and Acetaminophen 325 mg) is commonly prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe pain.

The usual adult dosage is 2 tablets every 6 hours as needed for pain. The total daily dose of Acetaminophen should not exceed 4 grams.

Its serious side effects include respiratory depression, apnea, respiratory arrest, circulatory depression, hypotension, and shock.

Itching is not a serious side effect of Percocet. Taking half doses may not be effective in relieving the severe pain following food surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
