How Safe Is Taking Amlodopine 5mg For High BP?

hi, i have been on 5mg of amlodopine for high blood pressure for about 8 years, no real reason for high pressure, i'm 5 foot 6 about 11 stone 10 and fit, recently my doctor doubled the dose as bp was 140ish over 90, my legs and feet swelled terribly within a week. saw a different doc and he toldme go back to original dose, had bloodtests for diabetes, cholestrol, liver kidnry and heart, all fine, i was also very tired. i stopped taking medication for 1 week butmonitered bp 3 times daily and recorded results, getting between 118 over 69 and 140 over 86, went back to docs and he said i could do this for further 2 months and record bp, i am 41 will this be ok

Hi
As you are both diabetic and hypertensive, you need intensive treatment for both these conditions as both these are additive risk factor for many of the cardiovascular complications.
Amlodipine is a good and potent first line antihypertensive, but leg swelling is a well known complication of this drug which often necessitate the discontinuation of this drug.
Another best antihypertensive option is ACEI group of drugs which has got some additional advantages other than bp reduction in patients with diabetes.
So discuss with your doctor

Thank you
