How Safe Is Having A Rotator Cuff Surgery While Experiencing Discomfort In Shoulder?

9 nine years ago I had rotator cuff surgery done on my right shoulder. I have been told 2 times since then that I would qualify for another rotator cuff but I have put it off. However, now the shoulder is bothering me so much that I went to the doctor again for it. This time I have been told that in the original surgery they shaved off about 1/4 of an inch of one end of my collar bone. They now say that the end that was shaved has eroded to the point that there is about a 1 inch gap and that it cannot be fixed. Do you agree? I am 56 years old and weight about 175 pounds and am 5 ft. 8 inches tall.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Shaving off the lateral end of clavicle is done for acromioclavicular joint arthritis and impingement syndrome, but this is not a rotator cuff surgery. The gap between the clavicle and acromion is not a criterion for surgery but instability of clavicle is. You need to give a detailed account of your sign and symptoms to help us reach a diagnosis. Rotator cuff disease and surgery is a wide subject, and results of surgery depends on the disease and surgery performed, though results are quiet good for most of them but they have their limitations as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
