How Much Risk Is Involved In Closure Of VSD During Pregnancy?

Hi,

My wife is suffering with 4-5mm VSD & it's by birth. she is 26yrs old now & never had any sort of problem. but as she is at 2 months pregnancy stage & as advised by the Doctor i went for ECO & ECG & they told that changes are taking place & VSD need to be closed to be on safer side, pls advise how much risk is involved as she is going thru pregnancy?

Medical field has evolved so much that now most of the complicated operations are done with great ease and safety these days .

VSD closure is done in different ways . One is through Angiography which is a very safe procedure but there will be exposure to X ray which may affect the baby .

VSD closure can also be done via open surgery but this is a major surgery and carries Risks .

If at all the risk of continuing pregnancy without getting corrected VSD is less then you may as well wait till she delivers and then go for Angiographic VSD correction .
