Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been prescribed minocycline hydrochloride by a dermatologist for my acne, but havent been taking it because I am afraid of the effect it will have on the birth control I am taking. I am considering starting it as I get my period this week. How long would minocycline stay in my system after I stop taking it? Would taking it for only a week be enough time to show any difference in my acne?
Hi, Thanks for contacting Healthcaremagic. Minocycline is very effective for acne. But you should take the tablet for at least four weeks,Usually we advise two months course for best results. Minocycline has no relation with female hormones and it has no interactions with birth control pills. So it is safe during your birth control period. But when you become pregnant better stop taking the drug because it may have some serious adverse effects on fetus. Occasionally minocycline therapy result in spontaneous abortions and you should stop once you conceive. Minocycline has a long half life.So it will take around five days to flush off the drug completely from the body. Please consult your dermatologist before discontinuing the drug.
Hope this information helps. Wishing you good health.
Thanks. Dr, Shinas Hussain
