How Long Should Zirtec Antihistamine Be Taken To Treat Allergic Hives?

Hi am writing for my 10 year old boy who had prawns allergy yesterday and I give him zirtec 2 times yesterday, that worked and most of the hives are disappeared.face still looks swollen especially around eyes and lips.is this ok to continu to the oral anti histamine or need to take to doctor?how long usually to treat the symptoms?

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your boy have symptoms of prawn allergy and due to which hives there which occurs when body give response to some external stimuli or some kind of allergen. Introduction of allergen to skin cause release of some chemical which makes rashes and can lead to urticaria. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to to find out the trigger factor which is a complicated thing , But the prevention of hives is the best thing one can do. Give cold compresses to reduce itchiness. You should consult dermatologist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe steroid therapy with prednisone. Till then take antihistamine drug and take anti-allergic medications such as Zyrtec(Cetirizine) and Benadryl.
