How Long Does Verapamil Work In Controlling Supraventricular Tachycardia?

My husband is having an SVT episode. He has had in the past. He has had now since 2:20ish, couldn t stop, and took a Verapamil now at 3:15. How long would you give that to work before going to the emergency room? He is lying down resting, hoping it will go away.

Hi welcome to HCM
I understand your query and concern.
Exact condition of your husband can only be predicted only after looking into his Serial ECG.Its definitely a medical emergency. He needs an urgent ECG monitor and blood pressure ,heart rate monitor.Verapamil will start to act in 20 min but we should be concerned about conversion of Supraventricular tachycardia to Ventricular fibrillation followed by arrest, which is life threatening. He may even need an urgent cardioversion with defibrillator. So shift him to emergency room immediately for advanced life saving support systems.Discuss the same with regards to above with your cardiologist.
Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.
