How Long Does Propofol Stay In The Body?

I had an upper endoscopy at 3:00 today, and was sedated with propofol. It s now 8:30, and I m wanting to have a beer. How long does the propofol stay in your system? I don t feel groggy, but wonder if there s residual propofol floating around in my system that could react with alcohol.

Propofol is a short-acting medication that results in a decreased level of consciousness and lack of memory for events. It is used in starting and maintenance of general anesthesia, sedation for mechanically ventilated adults, and procedural sedation.

Propofol is highly protein-bound in-vivo and is metabolized by conjugation in the liver. The half-life of elimination of Propofol has been estimated to be between 2 and 24 hours.

However, its duration of clinical effect is much shorter, because Propofol is rapidly distributed into peripheral tissues. Hence, it is better advisable that you can consider the consumption of alcohol after 24 hours.
