How Long Does Aricept Take To Leave The System?

My mother has been on Aricept (generic) for a few years. 5 mg. She is having severe bowel problems so the doctor wants her to stop taking Aricept for about a month to see if the bowel problems go away. How long does it take for Aricept to leave her system? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The elimination half-life of Aricept (donepezil) is approximately 70 hours, meaning that it takes around 5-6 days for half of the drug to be eliminated from the body. However, it can take several weeks for the drug to be eliminated from the body.

It is important to note that the effects of Aricept on cognitive function may last longer than the time it takes for the drug to be eliminated from the body. It is also possible that stopping Aricept abruptly may cause a worsening of cognitive symptoms.

It is important to follow the doctor's instructions carefully and to monitor any changes in cognitive function or other symptoms during the period when your mother is not taking Aricept. If you have any concerns or questions, it is best to consult with her doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
